New Zealand, Malaysia to strengthen trade in premium halal meat
The announcement was made during the Halal Forum in Wellington on Wednesday, which brought together senior officials from both countries. According to a statement from the New Zealand government, the collaboration aims to unlock new export channels for New Zealand meat producers.
In 2024, New Zealand exported halal meat worth over 60 million NZ dollars (approx. 35.68 million U.S. dollars) to Malaysia — a figure expected to grow substantially under the new initiative.
As part of the agreement, Malaysian authorities will inspect multiple New Zealand processing facilities to assess their eligibility for direct market access to Malaysia. These inspections are seen as a critical step toward expanding halal exports.
“With Malaysia’s population now exceeding 35 million, the potential for market growth is significant,” said Andrew Hoggard, New Zealand’s Minister for Food Safety. “Once approved, this will boost returns for Kiwi farmers, processors, and exporters.”
Hoggard added that efforts are underway to simplify export procedures for halal meat, including updates to registration, documentation, processing, and packaging requirements — all aimed at reducing red tape and supporting export growth.
