US offers to mediate between Syrian government, SDF

(MENAFN) The United States said on Saturday that it is prepared to play a role in encouraging dialogue between the Syrian government and the YPG/SDF as tensions rise in the northern city of Aleppo. US officials indicated that Washington is willing to help create conditions for “constructive engagement” between the two sides as the situation on the ground remains volatile.

The US envoy to Syria said he recently held talks in Damascus with Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, and other members of the Syrian leadership team.

He said the meeting was held “to discuss recent developments in Aleppo and the broader path forward for Syria’s historic transition.”

According to the envoy, the discussions were conducted on behalf of US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He added that Trump sees the current period as “a pivotal opportunity for a new, unified Syria” where all segments of society — including Arabs, Kurds, Druze, Christians, Alawites, Turkmen, and Assyrians — “are treated with respect and dignity and afforded meaningful participation in governance and security institutions.”

The United States, he said, welcomes Syria’s ongoing political transition and supports the current government’s efforts to stabilize the country, rebuild state institutions, and respond to the population’s demands for peace, safety, and economic recovery.

He also reiterated continued US backing for operations against ISIS, including Operation Inherent Resolve, as well as Washington’s partnership with the SDF.

Referring to existing arrangements between Damascus and the SDF, the envoy said: “The Syrian government has reaffirmed its commitment to the March 2025 integration agreement with the SDF, which provides a framework for incorporating SDF forces into national institutions in a manner that preserves Kurdish rights and strengthens Syria’s unity and sovereignty.”

However, he warned that recent events in Aleppo appear to undermine that framework, describing the situation as “deeply concerning.” He called on all sides to show restraint, halt hostilities immediately, and return to negotiations in line with the March 10 and April 1, 2025 agreements between the Syrian government and the SDF.
