Germany Welcomes Board of Peace Meeting, Highlights Unresolved Issues

(MENAFN) Germany on Friday expressed cautious support for the recent Board of Peace gathering in Washington, D.C., while underlining that significant matters remain unresolved.

Speaking in Berlin, Deputy Foreign Ministry spokesman Josef Hinterseher told reporters that although Berlin welcomes the discussions, critical elements still require clarification. "While we welcome the Board of Peace talks, yesterday's meeting also showed that there are still many important issues to be clarified,” he said.

He emphasized that Germany’s priority is ensuring the global community continues working to ease conditions in the Gaza Strip. “First of all, it is important to us that the international community remains committed to improving the situation in the Gaza Strip, and that is also the focus of the Peace Council (Board of Peace), which is derived from Resolution 2803. This improvement is urgently needed,” he added.

Hinterseher pointed to the pressing humanitarian challenges in Gaza, noting that beyond immediate relief, there must also be lasting security and governance frameworks led by Palestinians themselves. He stressed not only “the need for an improvement in the still very difficult humanitarian situation, but also sustainable security structures and administrative structures under Palestinian ownership and responsibility.”

He further stated that any rebuilding efforts in Gaza should “be carried out on the basis of international law.”

Germany participates in the Board of Peace discussions solely as an observer.

Last month, Lisa Royaee, a spokeswoman for the Economic Cooperation and Development Ministry, reiterated Berlin’s position on reconstruction parameters, saying there are “clear red lines when it comes to rebuilding (in Gaza), which means no annexation and the focus must be on the population.”

The establishment of the board aligned with the beginning of the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, which brought a halt to Israel’s military campaign in the territory after two years of fighting that left more than 71,000 people dead.

Chaired by US President Donald Trump, the Board of Peace was initially designed to supervise the ceasefire and oversee Gaza’s reconstruction. However, its mandate has since broadened to encompass peace-building efforts in other regions impacted by or vulnerable to conflict.
